According to Karen Armstrong, author of “Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life,” “The purpose of mindfulness, one of the practices that brought the Buddha to enlightenment, is to help us to detach ourselves from the ego by observing the way our minds work.” One step to a compassionate life is to be aware of our thoughts in the present moment. With awareness, we take another step. We can consciously choose kindly, compassionate actions.
